PRESENTATIONS:
· Education Reform by Kathy Haigh (Rep. 35th), Brenda Blasingame, Dr. Diane Kinder, Sen. Derek Kilmer, Rep. Larry Seaquist, and Charlotte Garrido. Rep. Haigh is Chair of Education committee and Rep. Seaquist is a member. Rep. Haigh discussed her comprehensive education committee connecting policy to money. Although it took some authority away from the ways and means, Rep. Haigh reported support from the ways and means chair – connecting policy to the money was an idea that made sense. Dr. Kinder discussed practices based on research, not unsubstantiated opinion. She mentioned a couple web sites: wheresthemath.com & edtrust.org. Ms. Blasingame discussed the “Thrive by Five” program to prepare preschoolers. Sen. Kilmer discussed the employer perspective on skills required. Ms. Garrido discussed activity regarding a 4 year institution in Kitsap county. Rep. Seaquist mentioned the health care crises connection to education. In the Q&A issued raised were problems of not listening to working teachers, need for social studies and parent involvement.
NEW BUSINESS:
· Votebuilder training – see Susan Cruver
· Election Observer training – see Susan Cruver
· KCDCC eboard opening – see Susan Cruver and attend general meeting on 9/17
· PCDCC eboard opening, Jon Abbott nominated, approved by acclamation, no nays and no abstain.
· Steve Martin introduced FISA resolution, but did not request vote
· Vote to endorse Tom Saunders for major of Port Orchard. Approved by supermajority and with some nays and some abstentions.
· Adam Brookis requested endorsement of Bremerton Park Levy Lid Lift. Approved by acclamation no nays, one abstention.
· Moved to endorse Mary Ann Huntington for Port Commissioner. Motion tabled by acclamation, no nays, no abstentions.
· Susan Cruver requested authority to represent anti-bullying position at state meeting. Approved by acclamation, no nays, no abstentions.
REPORTS:
· Anita Latch, state committeewoman – reported program from Howard Dean to fill all PCO slots
· George Robison, state committeeman – bring friends and neighbors for Ed Robison’s presentation on Iraq
· Susan Cruver, chairwoman – no report in interest of time
· Gerry Baldwin, communications – got web up
· Steve Martin, vice-chair – discussed FISA resolution
· Renee Proctor-Brown, Treasurer -- $6900 in bank
· Jim Sizemore, Secretary pro tem – last minute volunteer to take minutes
GOOD OF THE ORDER:
· Cleared up issue regarding endorsements across boundaries
· Helen noted change of time for anti war protest Th. moved from 5:30 to 4:30 – still outside Fred Meyers at Sedgewick and Bethel
· Rally and concert 7 pm, 9/21, Fox Island United Church of Christ, 726 6th Ave., Fox Island – call Jerry at 253-267-9000 or church at 253-549-2420
· Derek Kilmer promoted a “pie” themed fundraiser on 10/11 in the Gig Harbor area
